A central tenet of military authority has been reinvented to better support the future force to fight and win.
The ADF Concept for Command and Control of the Future was approved for the Australian Defence Force’s use by the Vice Chief of the Defence Force in May 2019.
The concept adopts the central idea of Hierarchical Command - Agile Control. This requires the separation of control and command functions and a significant change to the definition of control while maintaining existing command structures and evolving the principle of mission command.
The concept defines the organisational and operational structures which the future force could employ to gain advantage at the operational and tactical level. It also characterises the methods by which future capabilities will be directed during operations.
The concept is intended to be used by those in Defence, industry, and research institutions involved in operational planning, force design, force exploration, experimentation, and in the delivery of professional military education and training.
