Human Resources

Defence Corporate Banner
As part of the Human Resources stream, you will work with seasoned professionals to help build, develop and sustain the Department’s workforce. It’s a big job and we look for graduates who are motivated, driven and show integrity.

  • Tailored suite of training that covers leadership, technical, departmental and general skills, needed in the Australian Public Service
  • On-the-job and off-the-job training, including week-long Study Tour of Defence facilities outside of Canberra
  • In each rotation you will have real tasks and responsibilities, and be fully integrated into the work team to make sure you contribute to your full potential; and
  • Human Resources stream graduates contribute to building, developing and sustaining Australian Defence Organisation’s “people capability”

Defence seeks applicants who will not only contribute to the current strategic HR environment, but will shape the people environment that will support our future workforce needs. We seek applicants who have passion, discretion, trust and respect for a highly diverse workforce; its strengths and weaknesses, desires and evasions.

The Human Resources stream takes 12-months to complete and consists of three rotations of four months each. The first of these is undertaken in Canberra, with the possibility of one in a regional area for those who want a further challenge. Rotations are offered across the entire Department, two will be undertaken in an area with a ‘people’ focus.

The four sub-streams within Human Resources we recruit for include Occupational Health and Safety; Workforce Planning; Training and Development or Human Resources Management. We are seeking graduates who have completed or are in their final year of a degree with any HR major, including Human Resource Management, Industrial Relations; Organisational Development, or Psychology for work in such areas as:
