Governor-General joins troops in Iraq for Melbourne Cup (0.43 mins)
The Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) joined Australian and New Zealand troops deployed in Iraq on Operation Okra for a special Melbourne Cup function today. Around 100 Australian and New Zealand Defence Force members deployed with Task Group Taji-7 stopped to watch the race with the Governor-General at the Taji Military Complex, about 20 kilometres north of Baghdad. The visit was also an opportunity for the Governor-General to engage with troops and hear first-hand about the work they have been doing to train Iraqi Security Forces. The 400-strong Anzac contingent is training the Iraqi Army to help ensure they are well postured to secure and stabilise areas cleared of Daesh.
