20th Anniversary of the Garma Festival (1.17 mins)

Defence personnel celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Garma Festival, Australia’s premier Indigenous event, in Gulkula, north-east Arnhem Land, Northern Territory 03 – 06 August 2018. The theme for this year’s festival was ‘Truth Telling’. The Festival’s primary objectives include reconciliation, education and understanding through sharing of culture and traditional practice; promoting and highlighting Yolngu culture; and creating economic opportunities beneficial to Northeast Arnhem Land. Defence is committed to reconciliation and closing the gap as part of the Defence Reconciliation Action Plan. The Defence Reconciliation Action Plan guides the foundations for a stronger shared future with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the defence of Australia and our national interests. Participation in the Garma Festival enabled a number of Defence representatives to engage with Indigenous leaders and community members as part of reconciliation activities.
