The Australian Defence Force attended the commemoration of the Battle of Hamel, at the Australian Corps Memorial in the town of Le Hamel, France on 4 July 2018. The commemoration, led by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, paid tribute to the courage, strength and sacrifice of Australian, British and American troops who fought together under the command of Australian, General Sir John Monash, GC, KCB, VD in a battle that would became a turning point for the Allied forces in the First World War. 55 members of the Australian Defence Force travelled to France to attend the commemoration, including an Army contingent of 10 personnel, as well as 6 personnel from Army’s 2018 Jonathan Church Ethical Soldier Award Battlefield Study Tour; 20 Australian Army Band members; and 18 personnel from Australia’s Federation Guard. The ADF also conducted a Headstone Rededication for Private Robert Bowness at Villers-Bretonneux Cemetery following the Battle of Hamel commemoration on 4 July 18.
